Community Spoon

Chef David Guas spent two weeks on the frontlines in Przemyśl, Poland, with World Central Kitchen, assisting in the emergency food relief for Ukraine Refugees crossing the border. Guas prepared and provided thousands meals to help nourish those communities. Through Community Spoon, Guas raised more than $26,000 to support the humanitarian efforts of WCK, alleviate some of his travel expenses, and provide comfort to Ukraine children and families.

In 2021, Guas created “The Community Spoon” to aid Afghan refugees in Virginia with meals and groceries. And in 2022, Guas once again applied the same community-driven spirit to get involved, immediately, in the Ukraine Refugee crisis. Guas independently booked a ticket to Poland - jumping in with Chefs Jose Andres & Marc Murphy, and World Central Kitchen to prepare meals for the influx of Ukraine refugees entering Poland. Many are entering the country without anything from home – but Guas believes that a fresh meal made with love is the most welcoming gesture to offer those who have suffered such a traumatic loss. It is with hope that they may know that they are safe in their newfound home of Poland and protected from the violence that is threatening their country.

Chef Guas is known for his community efforts. At the onset of the pandemic - Guas went rogue the day following the public-school shutdown, launching the FIRST rapid relief response to feed local students and families nutritious, plant-based meals in Arlington County at a time when no meals were available to people reliant on the public-school lunch program. As the co-founder of Chefs Feeding Families, formed with Real Food for Kids, the organization provided over 280,000 meals. Through his selfless effort, Guas was awarded Arlington County Covid-Hero and recognized as a Community Weaver by the Aspen Institute.
